Being a new guy to the harbour one of the biggest reasons I joined SYC is the close proximity to the mouth of the harbour and it was pointed out to me that because the club is right next to a military base, it has top-notch security.
On the down-side I'm not too crazy about all the fog this time of year . And those big boulders adjacent to the launch ramp have to be removed to make it easier for dinghy sailors to launch.

I always had mixed feelings about Shearwater. I took my White Sail instruction on 420s there in 1983. The next year a guy at work sponsored me as an associate member (non-military) and although the price was right, I always felt out of place around the clubhouse. For a smaller boat like my Siren 17, it was very easy to get to fun sailing waters around MacNabs & Lawler Islands plus a relatively short sail to the Halifax watefront, or even over to the North West Arm. After crewing out of the Squadron on countless '3 hour tours', I feel a need to try different waters for a bit. I like to explore and sight-see more so than race.
