Media Advisory
(issued Wednesday May 9, 2007)
Media Launch for the Harding Medical Mobility Cup, 2007
at
Dartmouth Yacht Club, Wednesday May 16, 10:30 am
The Mobility Cup, Canada’s international regatta for sailors with disabilities, will sail into Halifax in August this year. This is the first time that Atlantic Canada has been chosen as the venue for the Mobility Cup, and the event will provide a major boost for disabled sailing in the region. The regatta will be hosted by SailAble Nova Scotia and Dartmouth Yacht Club (DYC).
A media conference will be held at DYC on Wednesday May 16 at 10:30 am to launch this year’s Mobility Cup, to announce our title sponsor (Harding Medical Supplies) and to introduce members of the media to the fast-growing sport of disabled sailing.
With the advent of new technology sailing has become a sport that is open to all, even people with severe disabilities, and it has changed the lives of many.
Two-time Paralympic sailor Paul Tingley, one of three co-chairs of this year’s event, will be on hand to explain what hosting the Mobility Cup means to the local disabled community and to introduce our title sponsor. Co-chair Trendal Hubley-Bolivar will demonstrate the amazing Sip & Puff technology that enables high-level quadriplegics to control and command a sailboat.
Co-chair Kevin Penny, who competed in last year’s Mobility Cup in Vancouver, will be on the water in our newly acquired Martin 16, a custom-designed sailboat for people with physical disabilities, for a sailing demonstration and photo opportunities. A chase boat will be available for photographers and camera personnel.
All members of the media are invited. A full press release and backgrounder will be issued on the morning of the media launch.
DYC is located at 697 Windmill Road, Dartmouth, (between Wright and Akerley)
